To promote sailing to all ages within the community by creating an environment
that fosters friendship, participation and achievement.

Learn to sail as part of your Club membership.

Many clubs offer their own in-house learn to sail courses for children and adults and some have yachts that you can borrow as well. You will be able to benefit from the advice, support and experience of other Club members. A Club environment is also a great place to make new friends. Through a Club you will find out about sailing opportunities and participate in a wide range of events including racing.

Club sailing programmes are run by experienced sailors who are always happy to pass on years of sailing knowledge. In many Clubs you do not need to own a boat to learn how to sail and often allow the use of Club yachts for the first year as you find out which class might be the most fun to sail.
As sailing is an outdoor pursuit, your clothing needs to protect you from the elements - sun, wind, water. In small boats, water-friendly clothing such as a wetsuit is best. Also weather-proof jacket and pants are a good option that allow for layers. Be prepared for all weather conditions and remember it’s always colder out on the water and in the wind.

Clubs run formal learn to sail sessions and a popular, less formal, "apprenticeship" style where you crew or skipper a yacht with a more experienced Club sailor. Whether you join a Club with some sailing experience or none at all a programme can be found to best suit your sailing journey. For more experienced sailors, some clubs and class associations run coaching courses to help improve your racing skills.

How to start sailing.

Start by visiting a Club on a sailing day. Have a look at a Club Sailing Programme and find a date and time of a sailing event that works for you. The time given is the start time for the race so most Club members arrive at the Club an hour or so before that to rig their yachts. This is a good time for you to visit and make yourself know to them as there could be an opportunity to have a go at sailing as crew. There are often questions you need to ask so have a look at the Club directory TAB and find someone who will be happy to answer your question or pass it on to someone who can. When you decide to join a Club use the directory below to find out how.
